It felt like a home - as in my grandma's home. Not a hospital room or ward. I related it to being very much like a sorority and made community living more relaxing and personal … a home away from home.

I've been in several different nursing homes over my career because my husband was a physician, and I've seen several nursing homes. The Cottages are a totally different experience. Your first impression is almost like a fancy hotel when you walk in. It's really comforting to know that he can be in a place that's more like a home or a resort to be able to spend his last years in.

With Mom, it started a few years ago when Dad passed away and her health started to deteriorate and we tried to convince her to go to assisted living but she just didn't really want to leave the home that she'd lived in for 83 years. … her health just kept getting worse and worse and worse. She wound up in the hospital and it was to the point that the doctor was talking to me about this might be a countdown …, at times in the hospital she was unresponsive, kind of slipping in and out of a coma. So the doctor was starting to set me up for hospice, and so, they got her stabilized and they said, "Well, why don't we release her now and we'll send her down to Hillcrest rehab and see if we can bring her health back." So we went down there, and she was in a wheelchair, and the therapist worked with her and the nutritionist, and the staff down there. They got her in a little bit better shape and they said "let's send her over to the Cottages and get her on their care." So she came over here to the Cottages and her health really started to improve. She went from a wheelchair to a walker, started eating more, her health just started bouncing right back. It's been very impressive, the situation we went into, it's been very incredible. Last year, looking at a year ago when she was in the hospital and they were talking to me about hospice, to now where she's down at Mable Rose - Assisted Living, it's night and day. Her friends that visit her now are just amazed at the progress that she's made, and the turnaround that her health has been, that's happened. I credit that all with the Hillcrest organization. --Al
